Excise duty on ethanol-containing petrol abolished
Petrol Excise Duty News: The government has announced some good news for the public. The excise duty on ethanol-mixed petrol has been abolished. This means that petrol containing 22% to 30% ethanol will no longer be subject to excise duty. This news is nothing short of a gift for the general public. As demand for cheaper ethanol-based petrol increases, it will benefit not only the general public but also farmers, as ethanol is primarily produced from sugarcane, corn, and damaged grains.
It's worth noting that the price of crude oil is rising so much that it has now reached $114 per barrel. This has directly impacted the import bill. Consequently, the government has focused on alternative fuels to reduce imports and improve the rupee's position.
What is excise duty?
Excise duty is an indirect tax levied on goods manufactured or produced within a country. Excise duty is typically levied on products such as alcohol, tobacco, and petroleum.
Zeroing of excise duty rules:
According to a new government order, excise duty has been eliminated on petrol blended with 22%, 25%, 27%, and 30% ethanol. The only condition of this decision is that these fuels are manufactured in accordance with the regulations and standards of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
Which fuel is cheaper, E85 or E20?
E20, or 20 percent ethanol-mixed petrol, was being promoted in the country, but to protect the country amid global turmoil, India recently launched E85 fuel. E85 fuel is 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent petrol. It's worth noting that E85 fuel is 20 rupees per liter cheaper than E20.
