Petrol and diesel prices have been reduced in Pakistan.

Petrol-Diesel Rate on May 23: Meanwhile, petrol and diesel prices continue to rise in India. This trend of rate hikes began on May 15th. Three fuel price hikes within just 10 days have caused widespread panic. However, the situation is different in India's neighboring country, Pakistan. There, the government has reduced the prices of both petrol and diesel.

The Shahbaz Sharif government in Pakistan announced a reduction in petrol prices by 6 Pakistani rupees per liter and high-speed diesel (HSD) by 6.80 rupees per liter on May 23. This has brought significant relief to the public.

Why were prices reduced?

According to a report by the Pakistan Petroleum Division and Dawn News, the government has reduced prices by adjusting the base price due to recent fluctuations in international crude oil prices and changes in Inland Freight Equalization Margin (IFEM) rates. The government is seeking to ensure that the benefits of last week's slight decline in crude oil prices are passed directly to the public.

A weekly review system has been implemented in Pakistan. Under this system, prices are set every Friday night based on global oil market trends. Since international crude oil prices fell slightly last week, petrol and diesel prices have also been reduced in line with established regulations.

IMF condition fulfilled

Pakistan is currently operating under the terms of a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). One of the IMF's conditions was that the Pakistani government collect a petroleum levy (tax) on petrol and diesel at an average of 80 rupees per liter. Since the government met its tax collection target last week, now that global crude oil prices have fallen slightly, the government has decided to pass on the benefits to the public.
