Pakistan’s Ambassador to Turkmenistan, KK Wagan, was reportedly denied entry into the United States and subsequently deported from Los Angeles, according to a report by The News, a Pakistani newspaper. Citing diplomatic sources, news agency PTI confirmed the incident.
Despite possessing a valid US visa and all required travel documents, Wagan was stopped by immigration officials upon his arrival at Los Angeles International Airport. A senior official from Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the deportation, attributing it to an unspecified immigration-related issue.
“The ambassador encountered an immigration issue that resulted in his deportation,” PTI quoted the official as saying. Reports suggest that US authorities directed Wagan to return to his previous port of departure, raising concerns about diplomatic protocols and the rationale behind the decision.
Pakistan’s Foreign Office acknowledged that Wagan had traveled to the US for personal reasons and confirmed that an inquiry into the matter is ongoing. The ministry urged against speculation regarding the incident.
Sources familiar with the situation indicated that Wagan’s name may have been flagged due to certain "controversial visa references" in the US immigration system. However, the precise reasons behind his deportation remain unclear.
Wagan is a seasoned diplomat with extensive experience in Pakistan’s foreign service. Over the years, he has held key diplomatic positions, including postings in Kathmandu, Los Angeles, Muscat, and Niamey, along with senior roles within Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Given the seriousness of the matter, Wagan is expected to be recalled to Islamabad to provide an explanation. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Foreign Secretary Aamna Baloch have reportedly been briefed on the situation. Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry has instructed its consulate in Los Angeles to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, PTI reported.
