New Zealand Captain Tom Latham Ruled Out of ODI Series Against Pakistan Due to Hand Fracture

Just before the New Zealand vs. Pakistan ODI series, the Black Caps have suffered a major setback. Captain Tom Latham has been ruled out of the entire series after suffering a hand fracture during practice.

Latham’s Injury Confirmed by New Zealand Cricket

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed on March 27 that Latham sustained the injury while preparing for the first ODI on March 29. An X-ray revealed a fracture, sidelining him for several weeks.

Latham was set to lead New Zealand in the absence of Mitchell Santner, who is currently playing in the IPL 2025. The Champions Trophy finalist was eager to make his comeback, but his return to the field has now been delayed.

Michael Bracewell to Lead New Zealand

With Latham unavailable, the New Zealand Cricket Board has named Michael Bracewell as captain for the three-match ODI series. Bracewell already led the team to a 4-1 T20I series victory over Pakistan, including an 8-wicket win in the final match.

Squad Changes: Nicholls & Mariu Called In

  • Henry Nicholls has been added to the squad as Latham’s replacement.
  • Mitch Hay will take over wicketkeeping duties.
  • Will Young will also miss the last two ODIs for personal reasons, as he is on leave for the birth of his first child.
  • Reece Mariu, an uncapped player, has been brought in as Young’s cover.

Series Set to Begin on March 29

The three-match New Zealand vs. Pakistan ODI series kicks off on March 29. Despite losing key players, the Kiwis will aim to maintain their winning momentum against Pakistan under Bracewell’s leadership.
