The National Basketball League (NBL) has stepped forward to support its referees following recent discussions and criticism surrounding officiating standards across the ongoing season. Addressing growing conjecture about the number of fouls and ejections, NBL Head of Basketball Operations Vince Crivelli clarified that there has been no change in rules or directives since the start of the Hungry Jack’s NBL26 season.
In a recent interview with CODE Sports, Crivelli reaffirmed that the league’s main focus remains on maintaining an exciting, free-flowing brand of basketball that allows players to perform at their best and fans to enjoy high-quality entertainment.
“Philosophically, nothing’s changed with what we’re trying to achieve,” Crivelli said.
“We want a free-flowing game that’s entertaining to watch, high-scoring, and where the stars of the game can shine. That’s our starting and ending premise.”
No Rule Tightening, Just Fluctuating Game Dynamics
Despite the noticeable increase in technical fouls and high-profile ejections—most notably of Sydney Kings coach Brian Goorjian and South East Melbourne Phoenix star John Brown III—Crivelli dismissed the notion that referees are under orders to take a stricter stance this season.
“So far this year, Scott (Butler) and I have not had a conversation to say, ‘turn it up on this’,” he confirmed, referring to NBL Referees Manager Scott Butler.
According to Crivelli, variations in game officiating are a normal part of any sports season. He emphasized that week-to-week differences often stem from how individual games unfold, rather than any systemic change in officiating philosophy.
“You’ll get some weeks where accuracy is super-high and then other weeks where that accuracy is challenged,” Crivelli explained. “It’s part of the natural rhythm of the game and the human element involved in refereeing.”
Maintaining Fairness and Flow
The NBL’s commitment to a balanced, high-paced game remains unchanged. The league has long promoted a playing style that encourages skillful offensive displays while minimizing unnecessary stoppages.
Crivelli highlighted that referees are expected to strike a delicate balance—ensuring that the game remains fair and consistent without interrupting its flow. “Referees are doing their best to keep the game enjoyable for both players and fans,” he said, reinforcing that the league’s goal is not to over-police but to maintain integrity and entertainment.
Referee Scrutiny and Fan Expectations
As in most competitive leagues, referees often find themselves under public and media scrutiny—especially in tight matches or emotionally charged moments. Crivelli urged fans and teams to recognize the challenges that come with real-time decision-making in such a fast-paced sport.
He pointed out that the league continuously reviews officiating performances to uphold high standards, while also ensuring officials receive support and training. “We review every game in detail. Our goal is always consistency, but perfection isn’t realistic in any sport,” Crivelli noted.

Despite the ongoing debate, the NBL continues to deliver thrilling matchups and intense competition through its early rounds. The 2025–26 season has already showcased standout performances and dramatic finishes that reflect the league’s growth and entertainment value.
