Milk and Parkinson's Disease: Thinking it's healthy, drinking milk every day? This incurable disease could increase your risk.

Dairy And Brain Connection: It has been observed in many studies that the risk of Parkinson's may increase slightly in people who drink dairy products, especially milk in large quantities.

Can drinking too much milk cause Parkinson's disease?

Does Drinking Milk Increase Parkinson's Disease Risk? You've probably heard or seen somewhere that there may be a link between milk and Parkinson's disease. Many people are shocked to hear this and wonder if drinking milk is harmful. The truth is, the research on this topic isn't completely unfounded, but the story isn't as straightforward as simply stopping milk and developing the disease.

What do experts say?

Dr. Sadiq Pathan told TOI that several studies have shown that people who consume dairy products, especially milk, may have a slightly increased risk of Parkinson's. This risk has been found to be 20 to 40 percent higher, particularly in men. However, this is not a direct cause, but rather a correlation that is yet to be fully understood.

What did the research reveal?

The longest and largest research on this topic came from Harvard University's Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study. After tracking people's diets for about 25 years, it was found that people who consumed three or more servings of low-fat dairy daily had a 34 percent higher risk of Parkinson's, compared to those who consumed very little dairy.

Similarly, the American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study found an interesting pattern. It included thousands of men and women and found that dairy consumption increased the risk by 1.8 times for men and 1.3 times for women.

Does this happen with milk?

Now the question is, what could be happening in milk? Some research has suggested that pesticide residues in milk, such as heptachlor epoxide, may be harmful to the brain. Galactose in milk is also believed to be a factor that, when consumed in large quantities, could affect the brain. Another interesting theory concerns the gut-brain connection. It is believed that dairy may influence our gut microbiome, leading to the production of certain proteins that can later reach the brain and increase the risk of disease.

However, this doesn't mean you should immediately give up milk or dairy products. Research simply suggests that moderation is essential. If you consume a lot of milk, especially low-fat or skim milk, it may be better to reduce it a bit.

What are the symptoms of Parkinson's?

Parkinson's disease cases are also gradually increasing in India. Symptoms include hand tremors, stiffness, slow movement, and impaired posture. Early signs include constipation, loss of smell, sleep problems, and mood swings. Doctors believe that complete prevention of this disease is not possible, but adopting a healthy lifestyle can certainly reduce the risk.
