ED files a petition in the Supreme Court regarding Mamata Banerjee

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a petition in the Supreme Court on Saturday (January 10, 2026) in the I-PAC case. In the petition, the ED accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of interfering in the agency's proceedings.

The agency said in the petition that during the raid on the premises of I-PAC director Prateek Jain in Kolkata, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had snatched important files, hard disks, and mobile phones from ED officials.

The petition was filed in the Kolkata High Court.

The ED had previously filed a petition in the Kolkata High Court on Friday (January 9, 2026), which will be heard on Wednesday (January 14, 2026). The ED drew the court's attention to the deliberate obstruction of its investigation to the detriment of its work. The petition sought a CBI investigation into the matter. The agency also filed an application with the court seeking permission to file a case in this regard.

The Mamata government filed a caveat application in the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, amid the ongoing tussle with the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the Mamata Banerjee government of West Bengal filed a caveat application in the Supreme Court on Saturday (January 10, 2026). By filing the caveat, the West Bengal government has explicitly requested the Supreme Court not to pass any order without hearing the state government's side, if any petition or appeal is filed in this matter. The government's move aims to ensure that the court gives the concerned parties a full opportunity to be heard before passing any unilateral order.

What is the whole matter between ED and the Mamata government?

In fact, on Thursday (January 8, 2026), the ED raided the residence and office of Pratik Jain, director of the political consultancy firm I-PAC, in connection with the coal scam. During the ED raid, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accompanied by senior state administration and police officials, visited Pratik Jain's home and then his office. During the raid, she allegedly removed some files and electronic documents and placed them in her car.
