Elections for local self-government institutions (local body elections) are likely to be announced. Municipal and town council elections are likely to be announced first.

If the election dates are announced today, the Model Code of Conduct will come into effect. Sources indicate that the state elections will be held in three phases. The first phase of local body elections will cover the state's 246 municipalities and 42 municipal councils. With the election process expected to take place over 21 days, the Election Commission may also immediately announce the dates for the Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections in the second phase. While the municipal corporation elections are likely to be announced in the final phase.

According to Supreme Court directives, elections for all local bodies are mandatory before January 31. These elections will cover the state's 289 municipal corporations, 32 district councils, 331 panchayat committees, and 29 municipalities. The entire state is closely watching these elections.

Had NCP-Ajit's leader already announced the dates?

Earlier in Pune, senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Dilip Walse-Patil sparked controversy by announcing the likely dates for the long-pending local body elections in Maharashtra. The Ajit Pawar-led NCP is part of the Mahayuti government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Walse-Patil said that elections for the district councils are likely to be held on December 15th, while municipal corporation elections could be held on January 15th.

He said the Supreme Court has set a deadline of January 31, 2026, for holding the long-pending local body elections. A video of Walse Patil is circulating on social media, in which he is allegedly heard saying, "According to my information, the district council elections may be held on December 15 and the municipal body elections on January 15. The entire process of local body and municipal body elections will be completed before January 31."
