In the latest 2026 NBA mock draft by basketball analyst Sam Vecenie, two of NBL’s top Next Stars — Karim Lopez and Dash Daniels — have experienced major shifts in their projected draft positions.
Vecenie, known for his work with The Athletic and The New York Times, released updated draft predictions earlier this week. According to his report, New Zealand Breakers forward Karim Lopez slipped to the 24th spot, while Melbourne United’s Dash Daniels climbed to 14th, surpassing Lopez in the rankings.
Earlier projections by ESPN’s Jonathon Givony had placed Lopez at No. 7 and Daniels at No. 10 before the NBL season began.
Vecenie cited Lopez’s defensive inconsistencies as a major reason for his decline.
“Lopez’s energy on defense hasn’t been good enough. He’s struggled off the ball for one of the league’s weakest teams,” Vecenie wrote.
The 18-year-old forward, who has been dealing with a back injury and recent illness, averages 10.1 points, six rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. Despite concerns, Vecenie acknowledged his offensive growth:
“He’s shooting 48% from the field and 46% from beyond the arc. The shot looks improved, and he occasionally flashes offensive potential.”
Meanwhile, Dash Daniels’ performance for Melbourne United has drawn praise.
“Daniels has helped himself as much as any player in this class. He’s been terrific for United, excelling in every area except shooting,” Vecenie noted.
The younger brother of Atlanta Hawks guard Dyson Daniels, Dash has impressed with his defensive strength, driving game, and court vision, though his shooting mechanics still need refinement.
“His jumper will take time to develop, but he’s only turning 18 in December, so there’s room for growth,” Vecenie added.
Vecenie’s mock draft projects Kansas recruit Darryn Peterson as the No. 1 overall pick for 2026.
