When there is an injury or cut somewhere in the body, blood comes out, although the bleeding stops within some time. This happens because our body forms a blood clot in such a situation so that excessive bleeding does not occur. But what if a blood clot does not form in someone's body? In such a situation, even a small cut can cause heavy bleeding, which can cause many side effects on the body. This condition is called hemophilia.
Hemophilia is a rare disorder in which blood clotting is not possible in the body because such patients lack the blood clotting protein. People who have hemophilia are at risk of excessive bleeding. Apart from this, internal bleeding can cause damage to your organs and tissues which is considered life-threatening.
World Haemophilia Day is celebrated every year on 17 April to make people aware of the problem of haemophilia and in memory of Frank Schnabel, who dedicated his life to improving the lives of people affected by bleeding disorders.
Hemophilia problem
Almost all cases of hemophilia are genetic disorders.
When a person is bleeding, the body usually collects blood cells and forms a clot to stop the bleeding. Hemophilia occurs when levels of clotting factors are low or blood clots do not form at all. If a person's family members have had this type of problem, then other people may also be at risk. The problem of hemophilia has been seen more in men than in women.
How to know if you have this problem
Symptoms of hemophilia vary depending on the clotting factors. If you bleed without any reason or if excessive blood comes out after a small cut and cannot be controlled by normal means, then it can be considered a sign of hemophilia.
Excessive bleeding due to cuts or injuries, abnormal bleeding due to vaccination or injection, blood in urine or stool, and bleeding from the nose are signs that you may have hemophilia.
What to do if you have hemophilia?
People who are diagnosed with hemophilia receive clotting proteins through a tube into a vein for treatment. Blood clot formation can also be promoted through some types of medicines. Health experts say such people should take extra precautions to avoid injury or any kind of cut. In some situations, severe bleeding can even be fatal.
