The history behind this day is about 108 years old. In 1909, the Socialist Party of America celebrated the day when approximately 15,000 women came together to protest low wages, long working hours and lack of voting rights in New York. Those women were demanding that they should be given better wages and should also be given full voting rights. A year later, the Socialist Party of America declared this day the first National Women's Day. It was the year 1911 when Russia started celebrating Women's Day on 8 March. In the year 1913, it was declared an official holiday.
