Which are the 4 Mahapaaps?
According to Garuda Purana, there are 4 types of Mahapaaps.
1. Brahma Hatya: Brahma Hatya is placed first in the 4 Mahapaaps. The person who kills a Brahmin is guilty of Brahma Hatya. He is called Brahmahanta.
2. Drinking alcohol: Drinking alcohol is also considered a big sin in Indian society and Hindu religion. According to Garuda Purana, the person who drinks alcohol is called a drunkard.

3. Stealing: According to Hindu religious texts, stealing the things of another person is also a sin. Such deeds should not be done.

How to atone for a great sin? Know the method
According to Garuda Purana, the person who is guilty of Brahmahatya should make a hut in the forest and live there for 12 years and fast. If the person guilty of Brahmahatya sacrifices his life while protecting a cow or a Brahmin, then this is also considered a way to get rid of the sin. Fasting for 3 nights and bathing in 3 times at the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati in Prayagraj gives freedom from Brahmahatya. Apart from this, one can be freed from sin by bathing in Rameswaram or Shiva's city Kashi.
The person who commits the sin of drinking alcohol can get rid of this sin by consuming boiling milk, ghee or cow urine. The person who does wrong with his Guru's wife should embrace the statue of a burning iron woman. Or else, one has to do the fast that has been told to get rid of the sin of Brahmahatya.
Apart from this, those who visit holy pilgrimage places like Gaya can also get rid of this sin. By worshipping Lord Shiva with rituals on the day of Amavasya, a person gets rid of all kinds of sins.
