There is a hill station named Mussoorie in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. Everyone knows about this. Many of you must have come here many times to enjoy the snowfall. But do you know that at one time it was strictly forbidden for Indians to go here?
It specifically says 'Indians Not Allowed', the reason behind this being that Mussoorie was settled by the British. It is said that in 1823 an English officer F.J. Came here while hiking on the beach. I was mesmerized by the natural scenery here and then many Britishers came and settled here with their families. In 1829 Shri. Lawrence opened the first shop in Landor's Market. Between 1926-31, a metalled road was built in Mussoorie and rapid settlement also started here.
The movement of Indians was banned
Although today you can go for a picnic here as much as you want, but earlier this was not the case. Indians didn't even have the respect to walk here. 'Indians and Dogs Not Allowed' was also written in big letters on Mall Road in Mussoorie. Later Pt. Motilal Nehru removed this rule. The Nehru family loved this place and used to come here often. There is an interesting story behind how Mussoorie got its name. Mansoor plants grow here in large numbers, due to which the place got its name Mussoorie.
