Mobile users troubled by unwanted calls can feel relieved from September 1, 2024, provided the companies included in the white list (safe number) do not re-activate the blocked numbers by misusing emergencies. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is continuously working to resolve this issue.
TRAI has issued new guidelines for all telecom providers including BSNL, Idea-Vodafone, Airtel, and Jio, which will be implemented from September 1. TRAI has directed that telemarketing calls and commercial messaging starting from 140 mobile number series should be shifted to a blockchain based distributed laser technology (DLT) platform.
This will prevent fraudulent calls, but calls and messaging from companies registered on DLT will continue. For this, consumers will have to block the numbers themselves. Numbers are unblocked for a certain period (usually 2 hours) to give instructions about natural disasters, internal or external security, or other necessary information.
After this period, these numbers do not get blocked automatically, taking advantage of which marketing companies resume messaging and calls. A TRAI official said that if messages are sent by taking undue advantage of the emergency, the subscription of the concerned telemarketer company will be canceled for one month and the company can be blacklisted if the mistake is repeated.
Spam calls will come only from these two numbers
TRAI has issued a new series of promotional calls and messages. According to the new rule, promotional voice calling messages will come from 140 mobile number series, while financial transaction and service voice calls will come from 160 number series. Soon instructions will be given to telecom companies regarding this. With the help of this series, users will be able to easily identify which message and call is promotional. This will help in preventing fraud.
