If sexual health is not right, women directly associate it with sexually transmitted infections, but we forget that it can also be related to pH level. Let us tell you that the pH scale runs from 0 to 14, with 7 being less acidic and 7 being more alkaline. The pH of a healthy vagina ranges between 3.8 and 4.5 during the reproductive years of 15 to 49 and is closer to 4.5 before puberty and after menopause.

There can be many reasons, why the pH of the vagina is bad. However, you can balance this too by making a few changes in your lifestyle. In this article, let us tell you such tips, with the help of which you can balance the pH level of the vagina.

What is normal vaginal pH?

A normal vaginal pH level is between 3.8 and 4.5, which is moderately acidic. However, what constitutes a "normal" pH level can vary slightly depending on your stage of life.

Why does vaginal pH matter?

An acidic vaginal environment is protective. It forms a barrier, which prevents unhealthy bacteria and yeast from multiplying too quickly and causing infection.

These problems can occur due to deterioration of the pH level of the vagina-

  • bacterial infection
  • increased chance of getting an STI
  • increased risk of pre-term birth, pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and post-hysterectomy infection
  • Pain during making physical relation

These factors can increase the pH-

  • During menstruation - menstrual blood has a pH of 7.4, so don't leave a tampon or menstrual cup in for too long.
  • Reasons for a physical relationship – Sperm has a pH of 7.1 to 8, so don't lie down for too long afterwards
  • Excessive use of scented products
  • taking oral or internal contraceptives and hormonal replacements

These changes can balance the pH of the vagina

  • Avoid sugar and processed carbs and eat a healthy diet, as these can change your pH. Also, get enough rest.
  • Garlic acts as a natural antifungal and yoghurt can help fight bad bacteria in your body. This is the reason why you should include these things in your diet.
  • Use barrier protection while making physical relations.
  • Avoid douching.
  • It is generally recommended to include apple cider vinegar in your diet, but do not consume it to maintain the pH level. It can be too acidic and can cause a burning sensation.
