How many are safe for health? This has been a topic of discussion for a long time. There have been numerous reports warning the public about the risks of infection from needles used for tattooing, but the risks are not limited to needles alone. A study has found that the ink used to make tattoos is also not safe. Ink may contain harmful substances that pose a risk of serious health problems.
According to American media reports, there have been many complaints of people getting infected due to tattoo ink in the last few years. Some people said that they were also allergic to the ink. To know how harmful these inks can be, scientists at Binghamton University have made a big disclosure about the chemical composition of some types of tattoo ink.
Some chemicals in tattoo ink can be harmful
The researchers said that tattoo ink consists of two major components – pigment and a carrier solution. Chemical analysis of the ink revealed that some inks may contain ingredients such as ethanol that were not listed on the product label. The expert said that although these pigments are not chemically harmful to health, bacteria or ultraviolet light can convert them into nitrogen-based compounds, which can lead to skin cancer risk.
Tattoos can contain harmful substances
In the journal, Scientific Reports, German and French scientists describe their findings during the autopsies of four tattooed men. Using X-ray fluorescent techniques, the researchers identified nanoparticles of titanium dioxide, a common ingredient in white and colored tattoo pigments, from the tattooed area. These can be aggravating factors for lymph node problems.
What do researchers say?
In a study of tattooed people in New York City, 10% of people complained of an adverse skin reaction to the tattoo. 42% of them said that they had more problems due to the red ink of the tattoo. Health experts found that severe skin infections were also observed in some people, which were very difficult to treat.
Researchers say, if you are also fond of tattooing, then pay special attention to its precautions. Aftercare is very important to you. Skin tests must be done before tattooing so that it can be known whether your skin is very sensitive to these colors or not.
