Lord Shiva has been described as imperishable in Sanatan Dharma. Shivji has neither a beginning nor an end. Mahadev, the God of Gods, becomes pleased with even a little worship done with a true heart. Bholenath's lifestyle, residence, and gan are different from other deities. According to the scriptures, Lord Shiva loves ashes very much, so he wears them on his body. Bhasma is made up of two words Bha and Sm. Bha means Bhartsanam means to be destroyed and Sm means to remember. In this way, due to the ashes in the literal sense, the sins are crushed and the God is remembered. There is also a symbolic significance of wearing it as it constantly reminds us of the impermanence of life.

Importance of Bhasma
According to Shiva Purana, all kinds of sins are destroyed just by wearing ashes. Bhasma is considered to be the form of Shivji, the man who wears Bhasma with purity and praises Shivji, he gets happiness in Shivlok. Describing the glory of Bhasma to Naradji in Shiva Purana, Brahmaji says that it is going to give all kinds of auspicious results and all the sorrows and sorrows of the person who applies it on his body are destroyed. By increasing physical and spiritual strength, Bhasma gives great happiness even at the time of death.

Benefits of offering ashes to Lord Shiva
Since Shiva is a recluse, it is also considered good to offer ashes to him. According to Vedic religious texts, Bholenath is pleased when Lord Shiva is decorated with ashes and removes all troubles. Apart from this, offering it frees the devotee's mind from worldly illusion. It is believed that women should not offer ashes on Shivling, because it is considered inauspicious.

Mythology
According to religious belief, once people were carrying a dead body chanting the name of Ram, then Lord Shiva saw them and said that they are carrying the dead body chanting the name of my Lord. Then Shivji reached the crematorium and when everyone left, Mahadev remembered Shri Ram and put the ashes of that pyre on his body. Similarly, according to another legend, when Shiva was performing Tandav after the death of Sati, Sri Hari burnt the dead body of Sati with his Sudarshan Chakra. Then Lord Shiva could not bear the pain of separation from Goddess Sati and at the same time, he applied Sati's ashes on his body. It is believed that since then Shivji is very fond of ashes.
