Who established the Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga?
According to mythology, Ravana was from a Brahmin clan. Therefore, Shri Ram committed the sin of killing Brahma. For which the sages had advised Lord Rama to establish a Shivling and anoint it. Because of this, Lord Shri Ram made a Shivling from the sand on the southern coast and anointed it.
Another belief is that while returning from Lanka, Lord Rama stayed on the sea coast of South India. He asked Hanuman ji to bring Shivling from the mountain to remove the sin of killing Brahma. When Bajrangbali was delayed in coming, Mother Sita made a Shivling from the sand on the south bank, which is called Ramnath, it is also called Rambling. And the Shivling brought by Hanuman ji was named Vaishwaling. Since then both these Shivling are worshipped. For this reason, Rameshwaram is also known as Ramanathaswamy Jyotirlinga.
