The month that celebrates love with warmth is called Pride Month. Every year, on this day, there are big celebrations in different countries, in which people and supporters of the LGBTQ+ community take part. Going back in history, Pride Month started in 1969 after the Stonewall riots. On 28 June 1970, the first anniversary of the Stonewall riots, the first Pride parade began at Stonewall. This is how gay activists in New York organized the city's first Pride Week.
This journey that started in New York is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over the world today. Today in this article, we will tell you about some of the biggest Pride celebrations around the world.
1. New York City
New York City tops the list when it comes to the LGBTQAI+ community. The reason for this is that this revolution started in this city. Protests broke out at the famous Stonewall Inn here in 1969, and since then New York City has been a favourite spot for Pride marches. Not only this, in the year 2019, it also became the first city to host Manhattan World Pride. The Pride Parade of New York City is counted among the largest festivals in the world. Every year it is celebrated with a different theme and this year its theme is 'Strength in Solidarity'. The whole month of June is devoted to various programs.
2. Berlin
Berlin Pride Festival is also known as Christopher Street Day Celebration. This festival is celebrated in June in July. The reason for not celebrating this festival in June is that in 1990 the festival was cancelled due to heavy rains in San Diego. After this people celebrated it in July and since then it is being celebrated in July. This month-long event is one of Germany's largest gay and lesbian events.
3. Mexico City
A week of partying, fun and food and drink is Mexico City's Gay Pride Parade. Earlier it used to be a small street party, but today it has become a week-long celebration. There are more than 50 activities in this parade and the parade takes place on the last Saturday of June. Gay clubs present here also host many parties and the celebrations go on till night.
4. Sydney
Have you heard of Mardi Gras? If yes, then tell you that this is the name of one of the biggest Pride events in Sydney. This celebration does not last for a day or two here but goes on for a whole month. People come from all over the world to attend this event. Not only this, but many famous stars have also become a part of it. The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is one of the largest and most exclusive festivals in the world.
5. San Francisco
This is the time when you will find many people dressed in colourful clothes immersed in the atmosphere of fun and celebration in San Francisco. Here the Pride Parade starts in the last week of the month. This is a two-day long festival in which not only dance and songs take place, but big speakers also come and express their views. Millions of people participate in this parade starting from Market Street every year.
6. Taipei
This city in Taiwan is no less than a paradise for LGBTQAI+ people. It is counted among the biggest events in Asia and every year thousands of people gather here to celebrate the festival. Live shows and many other events take place in this 4-day event. This year the parade to be held here will complete 21 years.
7. Sao Paulo
It is believed that only 2000 people participated in the parade which started in 1997. But today it is one of the most popular events in the city. This 5-day event is not just a party, but it is also a political event, in which different themes and slogans are spoken every year. In the year 2006, 2.5 million people took part in the largest Pride Parade in South America, after which its name was included in the Guinness World of Records. It then broke its record in 2009 with 4 million people. To date every year so many people participate in this parade.
8. London
Even before the start of June, preparations for Pride festivals begin around the world. Similarly, in London, preparations for the parade and party are done a month in advance. Every year the Pride Parade has a different theme and this year's theme is 'Never March Alone'. People of every gender, ethnicity, sexuality and race participate in this parade.
9. Los Angeles
The city hosts a variety of events throughout the month, including the Pride Festival and Parade in West Hollywood. This year the preparations for the 53rd Annual Festival in Los Angeles have been done in full swing. This was the first permitted Gay Pride in the year 1970, which is why this festival is so popular here. Every year, it brings in the biggest stars and this year too will see performances by iconic entertainers such as Mariah Carey, Megan Thee Stallion, RuPaul's Drag Race, Fletcher and King Princess.
10. Madrid
Spain was the third country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage, so you can imagine what a big deal Pride is for the European country's capital. In Spanish, this pride is called Orgullo Gay de Madrid or MADO. There are many live performances in this week-long festival. Madrid's annual Pride Festival is one of the largest celebrations in Europe. It is celebrated every year from 28 June.
