National Pollution Control Day is celebrated on 2 December because the Bhopal gas tragedy took place on 2-3 December 1984 and this day is celebrated in the memory of the people who lost their lives in it. This gas tragedy in Bhopal is one of the deadliest industrial pollution disasters in history.

If we talk about the importance of this day, then this day is celebrated to spread awareness among the people about environmental pollution and to encourage industries to adopt pollution control. The purpose of this day is also to make people aware to prevent any industrial disaster.
