The cases of road accidents are continuously increasing across the country. One of the main reasons for this is people not following road rules. Road Safety Week is organized every year by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways from 11 January to 17 January to make people understand the importance of road safety across the country. Road Safety Week is a nationwide campaign. The main objective of this campaign is to make citizens aware of road safety. This can reduce the number of accidents occurring every day. Let us know how many people lost their lives and how many people were injured in road accidents in the last few years.

Statistics of deaths due to road accidents
According to a report released by the Central Government, there has been an increase of 12 percent in road accidents in the year 2022. The Union Ministry of Road and Transport Highways has also shared the reasons for increasing road accidents along with the figures in the report.

What is the reason for road accidents?
The Union Ministry of Road and Transport Highways reported that the biggest reason for road accidents is driving at high speed. Also, there is reckless or drunk driving and not following traffic rules. Due to these reasons, road accidents are increasing year after year.

The most dangerous reason
According to the report, more than 50 thousand people have lost their lives in bike accidents. Most of these cases were of driving without a helmet. Last year, 35,692 people died while riding bikes without helmets. Whereas around 14,337 people died while riding a pillion without a helmet.

Not wearing a seat belt is also a big reason
According to the statistics, 16,715 people sitting in the car lost their lives who were not wearing seat belts. Of these, about 8300 people were car drivers. While 8331 people were passengers in the car. The government believes that people will have to be made aware to avoid such road accidents. So that as many lives as possible can be saved.

Given road safety, every year during the National Road Safety Week, an awareness campaign is conducted among as many people as possible regarding road rules. Different organizations and groups do different things to inform people about the rules for avoiding accidents.
