Cancer is a rapidly growing problem around the world. Every year millions of people die due to cancer. Many of these cancers are preventable. Health experts say this requires continuous effort from an early age. People who have already had cancer in their family should be even more alert.

India celebrates National Cancer Awareness Day on 7 November every year to raise awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment. The Union Health Ministry started it in 2014.

Health experts say, there are many such bad habits of our routine and eating habits which are increasing the risk of cancer. If all the people are made aware of this, then prevention of cancer can be easy. Let us know about the reasons that have been considered responsible for cancer.

Cancer risk
Cancer specialists say that if we improve our lifestyle, the risk of cancer can be reduced to a great extent. Some studies show that the risk of cancer increases with age, although younger people and even children can fall prey to it. Apart from this, lifestyle factors such as smoking, being overweight, dietary irregularities, and physical inactivity can also increase the risk.

Tobacco and alcohol consumption
Smoking is considered to be the main cause of cancer and is responsible for 80-90% of lung cancer deaths. Tobacco smoke contains carcinogens that damage DNA in cells, leading to mutations and uncontrolled cell growth. Similarly, excessive or regular consumption of alcohol increases the risk of developing certain types of cancer including liver, esophageal, and colorectal cancer.

Diet disturbances
Some types of diet have also been found to increase the risk of cancer. Eating red and processed meats in particular may increase the risk of colorectal cancer. These meats contain carcinogenic compounds such as nitrates and nitrites, which can damage the intestinal lining.

Some studies have also shown a high-fat diet to be harmful. Similarly, a diet high in sugar can increase inflammation in the body, which can promote many diseases including cancer.

Avoid physical inactivity
Exercise is most important to keep the body healthy and fit. Cancer risk has also been seen to increase in people who do not exercise or are physically inactive. Physical inactivity can lead to weight gain. Studies have found overweight or obesity to be responsible for cancer risk.
