There has been a long discussion on how mobile phones are harming the physical and mental health of humans. Health experts say that people are spending more time on mobile phones, which increases screen time. Increased screen time has been considered harmful to health in many ways in studies. Some reports have also expressed concern that excessive use of mobile phones and often talking with the phone close to the ear can increase the risk of brain cancer. A recent study has revealed whether mobile phones are increasing the risk of brain cancer.
Researchers at the World Health Organization have given relief news based on a comprehensive review of studies. Experts said that mobile phones do not pose a risk of brain or head cancer.
Although excessive use of mobile phones has been considered to have harmful effects on overall health, this study has revealed the risks of cancer caused by it.
Review of more than 5,000 studies
This study has been conducted under the leadership of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPNSA). For this, the researchers examined more than 5,000 studies done on mobile phones and their side effects. The final analysis included 63 observational studies of the side effects of mobile phones on humans between 1994 and 2022.
Professor Ken Karipidis, scientist at ARPNSA and lead author of the review, says, based on investigations done at many levels, we can say that there is no evidence of brain cancer due to mobile.
The study between the relationship between mobile and cancer
This study looked at cancer of the central nervous system (including the brain, meninges, pituitary gland, and ear), salivary gland tumors, and brain tumors due to long-term mobile use (for 10 years or more). Professor Karipidis says, that because we keep mobile phones near our heads while making calls, there has often been a concern that the radiation emitted from the phone can cause brain cancer.
Alert was given in earlier studies
Early studies of the relationship between mobile phones and cancer had alerted us about this danger.
To understand this comprehensively, this time scientists examined the risks between groups of people with brain tumors and those without. On this basis, experts say, we are completely convinced by the conclusion. Certainly, the use of mobile phones has increased but the rate of brain tumors has remained stable.
What do the researchers say?
Sydney University professor and chairman of the Environmental Cancer Committee Tim Driscoll says, I think people should be convinced by this study, although it is important to remember that studies are not perfect and excessive use of mobile phones is not good for health in many other cases.
Professor Karipidis said that there are no signs of an effect on fertility in men and women due to mobile phones. But this does not mean that mobiles are completely safe. Everyone needs to be cautious about its physical and mental side effects. Next-level studies are being done to understand this.
