The lungs play an important role in maintaining proper oxygen circulation throughout the body, however, over time the risk of many serious diseases related to this organ is increasing. Studies have found that many lifestyle and environmental conditions are seriously damaging the lungs. This is the reason why cases of lung cancer have also increased globally.
Lung cancer is causing the death of millions of people every year. According to the data of Globocan 2022, in the year 2022, about 1.8 million (18 lakh) deaths occurred due to lung cancer worldwide. It is also the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Surprisingly, the risk of this cancer has also been reported to be increasing in the younger population.
World Lung Day is celebrated every year on 25 September to raise awareness about lung health and the prevention of related diseases. Let us understand the causes and prevention of lung cancer.
Cases of lung cancer
Cases of lung cancer have increased in India too. Lung cancer accounts for 5.9% of all cancers in India and 8.1% of all cancer-related deaths.
This cancer occurs due to the uncontrolled growth of cells in the lungs. This happens due to changes in the DNA of cells. Cancer cells can form tumors. There is also a risk of damage to healthy tissues due to tumors. Over time, cancer cells can break down and spread to other parts of the body.
Studies have found many factors responsible for lung cancer, of which smoking is the most prominent.
Smoking is the biggest risk.
Smokers have the highest risk of lung cancer. With every puff of a cigarette, your risk increases. Experts estimate that 80% of lung cancer deaths are related to smoking. Apart from this, even if you do not smoke but are a victim of secondhand smoke, you can still have lung cancer. Exposure to smoke produced by burning tobacco products is called secondhand smoking.
Apart from this, being exposed to air pollution, and chemicals can also be dangerous for you.
How to identify its symptoms?
Cancer can keep growing in your body for a long time i.e. for many years, before you come to know about it. There are often no symptoms in the early stages of lung cancer. However, some signs should be paid serious attention to.
Cancer in and around the lungs can cause you to cough for a long time. Apart from this, problems like bleeding with cough, chest pain, difficulty in breathing, and wheezing can be signs of cancer. If these symptoms are accompanied by bone pain, weight loss without trying, loss of appetite, or swelling in the face and neck, then be careful.
How to avoid lung cancer?
There is no sure way to prevent lung cancer but with the help of some measures you can reduce your risks. For this, it is most important to stay away from smoking. Also, avoid places with chemicals and pollution. A healthy diet and regular exercise habits can save you from the risk of lung cancer and many other cancers.
If you notice symptoms of cancer, get it checked in time. Timely treatment increases the chances of survival.
