Jagannath Rath Yatra 2023: People from all over the country and abroad join to participate in the world-famous Lord Jagannath's chariot. The magnificence of this yatra is visible. This yatra is taken out on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month. The belief behind this Rath Yatra is that on this day Lord Jagannath visits the Gundicha temple with his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra. This year Jagannath Rath Yatra will be taken out on Tuesday, June 20, 2023.

What is the history of this journey?
The Jagannath Rath Yatra begins from the 12th century. Its detailed description is found in Hindu sacred texts such as the Padma Purana, the Brahma Purana, and the Skanda Purana. According to legend, on this day, Lord Jagannath along with his sister Subhadra and elder brother Balabhadra went to the Gundicha temple via their maternal aunt's house. The day is now celebrated every year with the Jagannath Rath Yatra. Three different chariots are made for Balarama, Shri Krishna, and Devi Subhadra for the Puri Rath Yatra.

Why does god get sick?
Every year for 15 days Lord Jagannath falls ill. Many mythological stories are going on regarding this. There is a belief that on the full moon day of the month of Jyestha, Lord Jagannath, sister Subhadra and elder brother Balabhadra are brought out of the sanctum sanctorum and given a thousand bath. Lord Jagannath falls ill after the bath and gets a fever. Because of this, he stays in the bedroom for 15 days in a resting posture. During this, special care is taken of them. Many types of medicines are given to them.

Simple food like khichdi etc. is offered. For 15 days they drink only decoction and fruit juice. Sweet milk is offered before going to sleep, and cool paste is also applied to the deity for the whole 15 days. During this time neither the bell rings in the temple nor the devotees are allowed to have darshan. He comes out of his restroom on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month and a grand Rath Yatra is taken out on this day.

Therefore, on June 19, Lord Jagannath will recover again and will appear to his devotees on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, through a grand Rath Yatra. The Rath Yatra timings have been fixed at 10:04 PM on this day and the Yatra will end at 07:09 PM on June 21.
