Yamuna River is a major river of North India; it flows mainly in the states of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. Along with the river Ganga, it is also one of the most sacred rivers in the country. Yamuna River is also known as Jamuna River. Surrounding the capital of India, Delhi from all sides, the Yamuna River is situated not only in Delhi but also in every corner of the country.

The Yamuna originates from the slopes of the Bandar Panch massif in the Great Himalaya near Yamunotri in western Uttarakhand. The eastern and western canals are also irrigated with the waters of the Yamuna. At the same time, the means of transport made to go from one end to the other is an iron bridge. This is one of the oldest bridges in Delhi, which was built during the British era. So let's know about the interesting facts related to it.

What is history?

This bridge was built to connect Delhi with Kolkata. This bridge was built by the British Government in the year 1866 by the East India Railway for 16,16,335 pounds. At present, the price of one pound is 90.13 rupees.

According to this, its cost will be about 14.5 crore rupees in Indian currency. At that time only one line was formed. This was followed by a second line in 1913 for £14,24,900. It has 12 spans of 202.5 feet and the last two spans of 34.5 feet. Its length is 700 meters.

To increase its capacity, the steel girder of the bridge was replaced by the Company Limited in 1933–34 for £23,31,396. After preparing the structure of the bridge in Britain, it was brought here and installed.

What is the speciality?

The design of this bridge was prepared to keep in mind the floods in the Yamuna River. At that time the danger mark level was considered to be 672 feet. It has a total of 11 pillars and all of them have different levels of foundation. The lowest foundation is at 615 feet.

At what speed does the train pass?

Due to being old, EMU passes through this bridge at a speed of 15 km per hour, mail and express trains at 20 km per hour and goods train at 10 km per hour. Delhi's Divisional Railway Manager RN Singh says that after the new bridge is ready, this bridge will be protected as a heritage.

3500 tons of iron is installed

You will be surprised to know that there is a total of 3500 tons of iron in this bridge. However, in the year 2011-12, about 240 tons of iron from the bridge was replaced. The work of replacing its dilapidated part is going on again for Rs 11 crore, so far about 900 tons of iron have been replaced. After completion of the work, the speed of the train will not have to be reduced.
