Indian Railways: The railway is an important part of the life of Indians. Indian Railways is one of the largest long rail networks in the world. From north to south and from east to west, railways not only transport passengers to their destinations but also act as major freight carriers. You must have been to railway stations many times, but do you know the meaning of Junction, Central, Terminal/Terminus written on railway stations?

Railway Junction
You must have seen the junction written behind the names of many stations. Mostly it is behind the name of the big station. A junction is called a railway station, where trains come from at least 3 different routes.

Terminal Station
There is no difference between a terminal and a terminus station. The word terminus or terminal is derived from the English word termination, which means to end. These are the stations where the train journey ends. There is no railway track beyond the terminus or terminal station. This means that the direction from which the train comes here goes back in the same direction.

Central Station
If Central is written at the end of a station, it means that there is more than one railway station in that city. The station in which Central is written is the oldest and busiest railway station in that city. Mumbai Central, Chennai Central, Kanpur Central, etc. are examples of this.

What are cant stations?
Cantonment stations are such stations, which are situated near a military area/cantonment. For example, Delhi Cantt, Ambala Cantt, Agra Cantt, etc. are examples of this.
