Government scholarships are provided to students at various levels of education from school education to UG, PG, and PhD levels to help them achieve better education. Many changes have been made to the scholarship system in Uttar Pradesh (UP). Now getting a scholarship for higher education in UP will not be so easy. Students above 40 years of age are no longer eligible for the scholarship.
The Social Welfare Department in Uttar Pradesh has imposed strict rules for students seeking admission to higher education institutions. The new rules dictate that students aged 40 years and above will not be able to apply for the scholarship. However, this change mainly affects undergraduate and postgraduate students. Research and doctoral students are exempted from this age restriction.
Rules for Scholarship in UP:
To maintain the quality of government colleges in UP, the department has implemented new rules. Till the last academic year, all students from universities and colleges were eligible to apply for the scholarship. Starting from the 2025-26 academic session, only institutions meeting the NAAC or NBA grading standards will be eligible for scholarships and fee waivers.
NAAC and NBA grading are very important. Currently, only 10% of higher education institutions have achieved NAAC or NBA grading. In the upcoming 2025-26 session, only those universities or colleges will get the opportunity to give scholarships that meet these standards.
Use of biometrics:
According to the new rules, students will not be eligible for degrees and scholarships unless they go to college. From session 2025-26, student attendance is mandatory with a minimum requirement of 75%. Colleges will use biometric and facial recognition systems to determine scholarship eligibility. The responsibility of implementing the face recognition system has been entrusted to Sriton. The costs associated with installing biometric systems will be borne by the colleges and universities.
