People have been smoking hookah since ancient times. Today its craze has increased a lot among the youth in the club. However, it is not tobacco in hookah but it is available in many different flavours. But this does not mean that it is any less harmful than tobacco hookah.
The Karnataka Government has recently banned smoking and selling of hookah in public places in the state. This has been done given the increasing trend of hookah smoking among the youth here and to reduce the burden of expenses on the diseases caused by it. Let us tell you, that according to WHO's Global Adult Tobacco Survey 2016-17, 22.8 percent of the youth of Karnataka consume tobacco.
Why is it dangerous to smoke hookah?
According to Stanford Medicine, one hookah session lasts about an hour, which is equivalent to smoking 100 cigarettes. In such a situation, if you smoke hookah daily, you may soon face serious health problems.
Disadvantages of smoking hookah
Whether you are smoking tobacco or flavored hookah, there are health risks in both. According to the American Lung Association, hookah consumption is linked to lung, bladder, oral cancer, and heart disease.
Apart from this, its long-term effects include impaired lung function, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, esophageal cancer, and gastric cancer. At the same time, short-term effects include an increase in heartbeat and blood pressure, and addiction.
This is why smoking hookah is dangerous
At least 82 toxic chemicals and carcinogens have been identified in hookah smoke. Although smoke passes through water, it does not reduce or eliminate the effects of dangerous, intoxicating chemicals released from tobacco.
