Infection of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) causes AIDS. Due to modernization and scientific efforts in the medical field, it is no longer an incurable disease, although the mortality rate due to this infectious disease has been very high. According to recent reports, the cases of this infection are increasing significantly in Tripura. Especially the increasing cases of HIV among students have increased the concern even more.
According to media reports, a senior official of Tripura State AIDS Control Society (TSACS) said that 47 students have died of HIV in the state and 828 students have been found HIV positive. Many students have also gone out of Tripura for higher education in prestigious institutions across the country.
The Tripura AIDS Control Society has identified students from 220 schools, 24 colleges, and some universities who consume drugs through injection. This is being considered the main reason for the increasing cases of infection.
Cases of infection are increasing due to drugs
According to reports, according to the data of the Antiretroviral Therapy Center, the number of active cases of HIV infection in Tripura is 8,729 as of May 2024. Of these, 5,674 people are reported to be alive, including 4,570 men, 1,103 women, and one transgender person.
Health officials said that in most of the cases, the children found infected belong to affluent families. The risk of HIV infection is also seen increasing due to taking drugs and using contaminated needles.
Know about HIV infection
HIV infection can occur due to many reasons, including unsafe sex, the use of contaminated needles or syringes, or infection from one person to another through the blood of an infected person. Due to HIV, the immune system of the body becomes so weak that the risk of other infectious diseases also increases significantly.
HIV infection that persists for a few months or years can cause AIDS.
The infection does not spread due to these reasons
Health experts say that you cannot get infected with HIV through casual contact with someone. This means that you cannot get infected with HIV or AIDS by hugging, kissing, dancing with, or shaking hands with an infected person. HIV does not spread through air, water, or insect bites. Doctors say that it is important for all people to know about the causes of its infection.
How to prevent it?
There is no vaccine to prevent HIV infection and there is no sure cure for HIV/AIDS. You can protect yourself and others from infection by following some measures. To prevent infection, you must have safe sex, and make sure that you use a clean and new syringe every time for injection. If the infection is identified in a pregnant woman, the risk of this infection in the child can be reduced.
