When should heat therapy be done?
Heat therapy is used to treat chronic pain, joint pain and stiffness. People troubled by such problems are advised to take a bath with hot water. By doing this, the strain of the muscles is reduced and relaxation is provided. However, it is advisable not to take heat therapy in case of deep injury. This is because hot fomentation increases blood circulation rapidly and muscle tissue can be affected.

When should cold therapy be done?
In case of injury, fomentation with ice or cold water is advised. By doing this, the flow of blood decreases. This reduces swelling and pain at the injury site. Damaged tissues get relief by fomentation with cold water or ice. This reduces swelling and muscle pain. However, ice should never be used directly on the wound.
