Diarrhea is a common problem that can be caused by bacterial, viral or parasitic infection, consumption of contaminated food or beverages, or medications. Should one drink milk during diarrhea or not?

Drinking milk during diarrhea is not beneficial. Milk contains a sugar called lactose, to digest which the body needs an enzyme called lactase. Lactase production decreases in many people during diarrhea, due to which lactose is not digested properly and the problem of diarrhea can increase further.

Fried foods

Oily and spicy foods should never be given to a child when he has diarrhea. This food can spoil the digestion process and increase diarrhea.

Leafy vegetables

However, leafy vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli are very beneficial for health. But it should not be consumed during diarrhea. It contains a high amount of fiber, which can increase diarrhea.

Beans

Legumes like pulses, kidney beans, gram, etc. also have high amounts of fiber. Besides, it also takes more time to digest, due to which eating it during diarrhea is harmful.

Fruit

Some fruits, such as oranges, grapes, and pineapples, have high acidity, which can make diarrhea worse. An exception is bananas, which can be eaten in diarrhea as it is a good source of potassium.

Caffeine and carbonated drinks

Tea, coffee, and cold drinks contain caffeine. Due to this, excess water accumulates in the body which can make diarrhea more severe.

Junk food

Junk food, processed food, and sweets should also be avoided. Instead of this, light and easily digestible food should be eaten during diarrhea.
