There has been a stir in the health world after poisonous chemicals were found in many popular bandages used for injuries. These toxic chemicals, known as 'forever chemicals', have been found in a study conducted by Mamavation and Environmental Health News, organizations that protect environmental and consumer rights. These chemicals have also been found in bandages of well-known brands like Band-Aid and Kurad.

The main findings of the study are not only shocking but also a matter of great concern for the millions of people around the world who use bandages daily. These chemicals can enter the bloodstream through open wounds, potentially causing various health problems. After testing 40 bandages from 18 different brands, the study concluded that 26 of them contained organic fluorine, a marker of harmful PFAS chemicals.

Indications of PFAS in 65% of the bandages

The level of fluorine found in the bandages was more than 10 parts per million (ppm). 65% of bandages tested showed signs of Forever Chemicals' PFAS. Traces of PFAS chemicals were also found in 63% of bandages marketed for people with darker skin. The level of organic fluorine was found to range from 11 ppm to 328 ppm.

What did experts say?

Dr. Linda S., co-author of the study and former director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and National Toxicology Program. Birnbaum expressed concern, saying that because bandages are applied to open wounds, it is troubling to know that they can expose children and adults to PFAS. The data clearly shows that PFAS are not needed for wound care, so it is important to eliminate these chemicals and opt for PFAS-rich ingredients to protect against PFAS.

Why are PFAS used in bandages

? According to Mamavation, PFAS chemicals are used in bandages for their waterproof properties. However, these chemicals have been linked to various health problems related to growth, fertility, obesity, and various types of cancer. PFAS, or per-ended polyfluoride, are synthetic chemicals that are resistant to heat, oil, stains, grease and water. These are commonly found in products such as adhesives, non-stick cookware, and food packaging.

What are 'Forever Chemicals'?

PFAS chemicals are nicknamed 'forever chemicals' because they are more resistant to corrosion and can remain in the human body for years. These chemicals can enter the bloodstream through ingestion or direct contact and can be absorbed into healthy tissue, potentially causing damage to organs. The study included a variety of brands, but the brands found to contain more than fluorine per 100 parts include:

- Band-Aid

- CVS Health

- Equate

- Rite Aid

- Amazon's Solimo

- Target

- Kurad
