Can We Overdose on Vitamins: Like all nutrients, vitamins are also very important for our body. What is the opinion of dietician Ayushi?
Dr. Ayushi Yadav told, 'When vitamins are consumed naturally through foods, there is no possibility of harm from these nutrients even if eaten in large quantities. But when its concentrated dose is eaten as a supplement i.e. tablet and capsule, then serious consequences of overdose can come to the fore.
Damage caused by vitamin overdose
Vitamin A
Vitamin A toxicity, or hypervitaminosis A, can result from eating foods containing vitamin A but is most commonly associated with supplements. Symptoms include vomiting and increased intracranial pressure.
Vitamin B3
Vitamin B3 is also called Niacin. When taken in the form of nicotinic acid, niacin can cause high blood pressure, abdominal pain, visual impairment, and liver damage when consumed in high doses of 1-3 grams daily.
Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 is called Pyridoxine. Long-term overdose can cause severe neurological symptoms, skin lesions, sensitivity to light, and heartburn, some of which occur at doses of 1-6 grams per day.
Vitamin B9
Vitamin B9 is also known as Folate or Folic Acid, if it is taken in excess as a supplement, it can affect mental health, and the immune system.
Vitamin B12
If you take too much overdose of Vitamin B12, then it can be taken out of the body through urine. However, excessive consumption of it can cause dizziness, vomiting, and fatigue.
Vitamin C
Although vitamin C has less toxicity than other nutrients, high doses can cause migraine-related problems including diarrhea, cramps, and vomiting. Migraine can occur when consuming a dose of 6 grams per day.
Vitamin D
Toxicity from taking too many vitamin D supplements can cause dangerous symptoms including weight loss, loss of appetite, and irregular heartbeat. It can also increase the level of calcium in the blood, which can lead to organ damage.
Vitamin E
If you take vitamin E supplements in excess, it can cause blood clotting, hemorrhages, and hemorrhagic stroke.
Vitamin K
If Vitamin K is overdosed, then the chances of toxicity are very low. But it can interact with some medicines, such as warfarin and antibiotics.
