Adenovirus symptoms: The outbreak of respiratory diseases has been increasing rapidly in Kolkata for the last few days. A dangerous virus 'Adenovirus' is believed to be behind these diseases. A senior health department official said that in the last one week, two children have died in Kolkata due to being infected with adenovirus.
According to the official, while one child breathed his last at a hospital on Friday, the other died a week ago at the Dr BC Roy Post Graduate Institute of Pediatric Sciences. Apart from this, many children are undergoing treatment for adenovirus at Park Circus Hospital.
What is adenovirus?
Adenovirus is a common virus that usually causes mild cold-like symptoms. However, this virus can also cause serious infections, especially in infants, young children and people with weak immunity. Symptoms of adenovirus include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, swollen eyes, diarrhea and vomiting. At the same time, in severe cases, adenovirus can cause serious problems like pneumonia (lung infection).
How does adenovirus spread?
* When an infected person coughs or sneezes, droplets containing the virus can spread in the air. If a healthy person inhales these droplets, he can get infected.
* The virus can live on infected surfaces, such as door handles, tables and toys. If a healthy person touches these surfaces and then touches his eyes, nose or mouth, he can become infected.
* Some adenoviruses can spread through the stool of an infected person, such as when changing a diaper. If a healthy person comes in contact with infected feces, he can get infected.
* Adenovirus can also spread through water, such as swimming pools or hot tubs. If a healthy person swallows infected water, he can get infected.
Situation in Kolkata:
Hospitals in Kolkata have seen a significant increase in the number of children suffering from adenovirus in the last few weeks. Pediatric departments in many hospitals of the city are full. Experts say that due to keeping children at home during the Corona epidemic, their immune systems have become weak, making them more sensitive to adenovirus.
What should parents do?
* Avoid taking children to crowded places.
* Make children have the habit of washing hands frequently.
* Give good diet to children so that their immune system remains strong.
* Avoid giving dry food to children and give them adequate amount of fluids.
* If symptoms like fever, cough or difficulty in breathing appear in children, contact the doctor immediately.
