Health Tips: With the changing times, not only has our lifestyle changed, but changes are also being seen in everything around us. Adulteration is seen in everything from vegetables to grains and fruits. Watermelon is also not untouched by this adulteration. Watermelon is one of the most consumed fruits in the summer season. But have you ever noticed that watermelons that look very juicy and red are naturally ripe or is it the work of some chemical?
Erythrosine used for coloring
One of the most toxic dyes used in watermelons is erythrosine. It is a pink-colored dye, which is mostly used to color food. FSSAI or the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has released a video to make people aware of this dangerous adulteration, in which it has been told how you can detect adulteration in watermelon.
It is told in the video that cut the watermelon in two and checks the dye with the help of a cotton ball on the pulp. If the color of the cotton ball changes, it means that chemical dye has been mixed in the fruit. If it doesn't that means the watermelons are naturally ripe. Erythrosine, widely used to turn watermelons red, can have very serious effects on the body.
Erythrosine can affect nerve cysts
One study found that long-term use of this dye can lead to serious complications including childhood behavior, and thyroid function. At the same time, apart from color, its taste is also enhanced artificially, for which a chemical called carbide is mixed.
Carbide is used for quick cooking
Carbide in fruits is commonly used by growers, who buy it raw from farmers and force-ripen them to make a profit. While buying watermelon, if you see any white powder on it, then it will be understood that it is carbide. Next time you see carbide on fruit, as it is used in mangoes and bananas, clean it thoroughly before cutting it.
Possible side effects of carbide intake
Carbide is extremely toxic and its overdose can be quite harmful to humans. It can cause headaches, skin rashes. Also, the lungs can be damaged. It affects the nervous system of the body and causes unconsciousness, and seizures, sometimes its side effects can even push people into a coma. That's why you should avoid consuming such fruits.
Avoid consuming out-of-season fruits
According to health experts, do not buy such fruits and vegetables, which are not available in season. Because during this time there is more demand for the product, to supply which the sellers forcefully grow and cook them using chemicals. While buying seasonal fruits and vegetables, always wash them thoroughly before cutting them. Also, check the freshness of the food before buying them.
