What is e-cigarette
An E-cigarette i.e. electronic cigarette is a battery-operated device, which contains nicotine as well as chemical solutions. When the person using it draws the puff of the e-cigarette, the solution turns into vapour through the device. In this way, on inhaling the e-cigarette, instead of smoke, steam enters inside. The liquid nicotine in e-cigarettes doesn't burn, so it doesn't produce smoke and doesn't smell like cigarettes. Liquid nicotine is heated to vaporize. That's why people who smoke e-cigarettes inhale vapour instead of smoke.
An E-cigarette is banned in India
E-cigarettes are completely banned in India. The government has banned its manufacture, distribution, and sale. E-cigarette was most prevalent among the youth, even school children were using them more, due to which the government banned them. In the ordinance, the Health Ministry has proposed to impose a jail term of one year and a fine of one lakh rupees for breaking the rules for the first time. Apart from this, for violating the rules more than once, a jail term of 3 years and a fine of Rs 5 lakh has been proposed.
Dangerous to lungs
Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, found that people who smoked regular cigarettes along with e-cigarettes had a higher risk of developing serious lung diseases than people who smoked the same product. However, these studies do not clearly show that e-cigarettes cause severe lung disease or that people with lung disease smoke more e-cigarettes. The researchers studied people who did not have any lung disease. During this, their consumption of e-cigarettes and regular cigarettes was monitored. These participants were followed for three years. "We found that participants who smoked e-cigarettes had up to a third of the risk of developing lung disease, even after controlling for smoking," said researcher Stanton Glant.
