What was so good about this day that it is called Good Friday? It is said that the time of Jesus' crucifixion is called 'Good' because in old English it is called 'Holi' i.e. holy. According to Slate, the Wednesday before Easter was called 'Good Wednesday' in the Oxford English Dictionary. Now it is generally known as 'Holi Wednesday'. Similarly, Good Friday is referred to as Holy Friday. However, this day is also called Black Friday or Great Friday.
