Who is Aditi Pant?

Aditi Pant is an oceanographer. Aditi Pant was born on 5 July 1943 in Nagpur in a Marathi family. Her father Appasaheb Pant was a diplomat and her mother Dr. Nalini Devi was a fellow at the Royal College of Surgeons. Being interested in science since youth, she made it her path.

Aditi Pant completed her graduation from Pune University. After this, on getting a scholarship from the US government, she went to the University of Hawaii for a Master in Marine Sciences. She obtained a doctorate from the University of London. Her thesis was related to the physiology of seaweed.

The first woman oceanographer to go to Antarctica

During that time, the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) had created a program for research on the Antarctic Ocean. In which research had to be done on many subjects and Aditi ji got this opportunity. She was very happy. From 1983 to 1984, Aditi became the first Indian woman oceanographer to join this expedition, who went to Antarctica and by living in the dangerous climate there, she gained knowledge of physics, chemistry, and biology. She built the first Indian scientific research base station 'Dakshin Gangotri' here with her team.

Achievements and Honors

She has been published in more than 65 international journals. Aditi Pant has 5 patents to her name. The Government of India honored Aditi Pant with the Antarctica Award. Aditi Pant has worked in senior positions at the National Institute of Oceanography, National Chemical Laboratory, Pune University, and Maharashtra Academy of Sciences and not only fulfilled her dream but also brought glory to the entire country.
