If we look at it, the fear of water is not taken seriously as an individual nature, whereas in reality, it is a kind of serious mental problem. We talked to mental health therapist Dr. Shalini Srivastava about this and are sharing the information we got from her with you here.

'Aquaphobia' is the fear of water

DrShalini Srivastava says that fear of water is known as Aquaphobia in the language of psychology. This is a kind of mental problem due to which the suffering person starts feeling fear by coming in contact with water or just thinking about water. However, the reaction and intensity of this phobia may vary from person to person. Just like someone is afraid of the deep and strong waves of seawater, someone else starts getting nervous just by seeing the water filled in swimming pools and bathtubs.

Many people stay away from swimming and other water activities due to fear of water. Such people feel afraid of touching water and even getting wet in it, hence they maintain distance from places with water. Whatever the fear may be, when it starts taking away your freedom to live life freely, then it becomes necessary to control it. To get rid of the fear of water, it is important to first know its real reason.

Why are you afraid of water?

Talking about the fear of water i.e. Aquaphobia, there can be many reasons for it. For example, memories of some accident that happened in water in childhood or the past get so deeply ingrained in the minds of some people that they start being afraid of water. While some people fear the possibility of drowning in water, they are afraid of going near a strong river or sea.

Apart from this, there can be some practical reasons for fear of water, such as people who live in rivers and places near water forbid their children from going near water. Such people try to avoid possible dangers by making children feel afraid of water. Wherever such children live in future, they have a special kind of fear regarding water.

How to overcome this fear?

Whatever may be the reason, it is important to overcome the fear of water so that you can freely enjoy life along with water. Since this is a mental problem, only psychotherapy is considered effective to get out of it. Let us tell you that in psychotherapy, two main therapies are tried to get rid of aquaphobia, exposure therapy and CBT i.e. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

In exposure therapy, the person suffering from this phobia is repeatedly exposed to water to overcome his fear. For this, in the initial phase, the person is motivated to feel comfortable with water by showing him water and water-related pictures. Later on, he is encouraged to face the waves of water. Dr. Shalini Srivastava says that through this therapy many people have recovered from the fear of water.

CBT i.e. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a talking therapy, in which the psychiatrist tries to overcome this fear by talking to the victim. For this, psychiatrists, after knowing the reason for the fear, counsel the victim so that he can come out of this fear.
