The summer season has started and the temperature is increasing rapidly in many places. In such a situation, the risk of heat stroke also increases significantly. Due to heat stroke, the body temperature increases, which can lead to unconsciousness, seizures, and even death.
Recently, a guideline issued by the Health Ministry has drawn people's attention that a person who has become unconscious due to heatstroke should not be given water to drink even by mistake. This may sound strange, but there are scientific reasons behind it.
Why should water not be given?
When there is heatstroke, the body temperature increases significantly. If an unconscious person is suddenly given water to drink, it can be dangerous for him. This is because rapid lowering of body temperature can lead to electrolyte imbalance. Due to this, the person is at risk of having a seizure or heart failure.
Then what should we do?
If you find that someone has fainted due to heatstroke, do not panic. Immediately take him to a shady place and loosen his clothes. After this take the measures mentioned below.
Cool the body: Place a cold wet cloth on the person's forehead, hands, and feet and turn on the fan.
Do not give water or liquids: As mentioned, do not give water or liquids if you are unconscious. This may make the situation worse.
Contact a doctor: Call an ambulance as soon as possible or take the unconscious person to the hospital.
Health Ministry's advice
The Health Ministry has also advised people to avoid heat. This includes avoiding exposure to sunlight during the day, wearing loose and cotton clothes, using an umbrella or cap when leaving the house, and drinking plenty of fluids.
How to avoid heatstroke?
- Avoid exposure to direct sunlight between 12 noon and 3 pm.
- Keep a water bottle with you while leaving the house and keep drinking water frequently.
- Use an umbrella or hat while going out.
- Wear loose and cotton clothes.
- Consume liquids like coconut water, buttermilk, and fruit juice.
Caution is very important in the summer season. In case of unconsciousness due to heatstroke, avoid giving water and immediately seek help from a doctor. Also, stay healthy by adopting measures to avoid heat.
