Legend in the scriptures

DrRadha Kant Vats tells that according to a story prevalent in the scriptures, in ancient times, Maharishi Medha once insulted a beggar who had come to the Yagya, due to which Mother Durga became very angry. Maharishi Medha sacrificed his body to persuade the mother and to atone.

After leaving the body, his parts got absorbed in the earth and pleased with that atonement, Mother Durga gave a blessing to Maharishi that his parts would grow from the earth in the form of food in future. Maharishi's parts buried on the earth appeared in the form of rice and barley grains.

That day was Ekadashi Tithi and since then rice and barley were considered living beings. This is the reason why eating rice on Ekadashi Tithi is considered as consuming the soul and eating rice is prohibited on this day.

Eating rice on Ekadashi is like eating non-vegetarian

According to the legend, the fasting of Lord Vishnu is observed on Ekadashi Tithi and the person who eats rice on this day is considered as eating non-vegetarian food. Any worship of such a person is not acceptable.
