Diwali is a festival of lights and enthusiasm. Sweets, fireworks, and the interaction of people make this festival very special. We illuminate our homes with lamps, do fireworks, and give gifts to each other.

Diwali is undoubtedly a very wonderful festival, but even a little carelessness during this time can cause many types of problems for you. There is a risk of blood sugar and weight gain due to disturbances in eating habits, while cases like burning of hands and eye injuries have also been seen due to carelessness regarding firecrackers.

It becomes very important to take measures to keep the eyes safe while lighting firecrackers. The spark and smoke of firecrackers can damage the eyes. In many cases, the risk of loss of eyesight has also been seen. Let us know how to take care of your eyes during the festival and what immediate measures should be taken if there is an injury to the eyes.

What do health experts say?

In a conversation with Amar Ujala, Dr Ravindra Prakash, an ophthalmologist at a Delhi-based hospital, says, "The smoke from firecrackers can cause irritation, redness and itching in the eyes. Apart from this, the number of patients suffering from eye injuries due to firecrackers also increases after Diwali. The chemicals present in firecrackers can cause serious damage to the eyes, so it is very important to be careful. Children should be allowed to burn firecrackers only under the supervision of an elder.

The smoke from firecrackers is usually the highest between 10 pm and 2 am. If possible, avoid outdoor activities during this time. Wear sunglasses or goggles while burning firecrackers so that you can be protected from pollutants and also avoid particles reaching the eyes.

If you have problems like irritation and redness in the eyes, then it becomes necessary to take some measures.

Wash your eyes with clean water.

Eyes may get irritated after coming in contact with smoke or cracker particles. In such a situation, wash your eyes with clean water. If you feel itching or burning in your eyes, then pat them gently instead of rubbing them. Rubbing may increase irritation.

Do not wear contact lenses.

Do not wear contact lenses during Diwali. Pollution particles and chemicals can get trapped between the lenses, due to which there is a risk of irritation. If you are wearing contact lenses, then wear glasses that cover the eyes properly. Burning sparklers should be avoided. Due to this, the risk of serious injury to the eyes has been seen the most.

If you feel more trouble, see a doctor immediately.

If your eyes get hurt while burning crackers or if there is a lot of burning and itching in the eyes due to the smoke and chemicals of the crackers, then do the remedies given. If you do not get relief from these, then go to the nearest doctor without wasting time. Avoid putting any kind of eye drops on your own. If there is an injury to the eyes and even if the pain subsides, still get the eyes checked. Internal injury to the eyes is not detected immediately, but it can have serious consequences in the future.

Doctors say, to take special care while burning crackers. Do not ignore medical advice under any circumstances and use crackers only in a safe environment.
