Dengue fever, a disease caused by Aedes mosquitoes, causes a large number of hospitalizations each year. In severe cases, dengue can also be fatal. National Dengue Day is observed every year on 16th May to make people aware of the dangers of dengue and preventive measures.

Meanwhile, in a recent study, a team of researchers alerted the people. The team cautioned that some changes are being observed in the dengue virus in India, which has changed dramatically, increasing the risk of developing a more severe disease. Some mutations have been observed in the virus which may increase the risk of serious diseases than previously thought. Since dengue patients are seen increasing in the country in the month of June-August, we need to be alert.

Changes are being seen in the virus
In the study, published in the journal PLOS Pathogens, the scientists reported that the virus that causes the disease has evolved dramatically over the past few decades in the Indian subcontinent. A team of scientists led by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has expressed apprehension that the dengue virus may increase the risk of developing serious diseases in India. Vaccination is needed to prevent this so that the severity of the disease caused by these new strains can be reduced.

What do researchers say?
Rahul Roy, Associate Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering (CE), IISc, says, “In the study, we were trying to understand how different the dengue strains seen in India are, in which we found that there is a lot of difference between them and the original dengue variant. There is a difference. It has changed rapidly in the last few years.

Till 2012, cases of its main variant were more in India, although since then the risk of new strains is seen increasing due to which the risk of developing serious diseases may also be higher. We need to show more vigilance regarding the prevention of dengue.

Know the risks of dengue
Dengue virus is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. These mosquitoes also spread Zika, Chikungunya, and other viruses. Dengue mosquitoes are more active during the daytime. Its bite can cause high fever, body-muscle pain with vomiting-diarrhea, and in some severe cases, bleeding with defecation due to internal bleeding.

Prevent dengue
Health experts say that all people should pay serious attention to the methods of prevention of dengue. Since there is no specific treatment or vaccination for dengue, everyone needs to consider preventive measures.
Prevent the breeding of mosquitoes in homes, do not allow water to collect.
Keep your doors and windows closed.
Avoid mosquito bites, and wear full-sleeve clothes.
Spray insecticides around the house to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes.
If you are seeing symptoms of dengue, contact a doctor immediately.
