Why is the Dahi Handi festival celebrated?
Lord Krishna was very mischievous in his childhood. Bal Krishna loved butter very much, so he used to steal butter from people's houses in Vrindavan and eat it and also feed it to his friends. The women of the village used to get upset because of their butter theft. That's why to save butter from Kanha, she used to hang butter pots at some high place at home, but mischievous Kanha along with his friends used to steal butter even then.

To reach the pots of butter hanging at a height, Kanhaiya along with his friends used to make a pyramid climb it, and steal butter from the pot. It was from here that the Dahi Handi festival started and this leela of stealing butter of Krishna came to be celebrated as the Dahi Handi festival.

How is the Dahi Handi festival celebrated?
In this festival, a pot is hung at a height. The boys together form a pyramid and one boy climbs over his friends to reach the pot and break it. The boy who reaches till the pot is called Govinda. This whole process is called Dahi Handi.
