Just imagine that you have a smartphone with which you can make calls and talk to someone even without a SIM card. It sounds a bit funny but it is going to turn into reality. We are saying this because soon you are going to get technology with the help of which you will be able to talk to someone on the phone even without a SIM card. The name of this technology is Direct to Device (D2D).

BSNL completed the trial
D2D calling will be started by the government company BSNL. BSNL has also completed the trial of D2D calling. BSNL has partnered with global satellite communication firm Viasat for D2D calling facility. Under D2D calling, users will be able to make audio and video calls to each other without a SIM card or additional network. D2D technology can be used with all smart devices apart from Android and iOS, including smartwatches. The best thing is that D2D technology will work even in those areas where no network is available.

What is Direct to Device Technology?
Viasat's Direct-to-Device connectivity is a revolutionary technology that enables mobile phones, smartwatches, and even cars to connect directly to satellite networks. The technology is designed for both personal and device communication, providing reliable connectivity from any location, especially in remote and under-served areas.

No mobile tower or wired connection is required.
The Direct-to-Device service is based on satellite communication, allowing devices to connect directly without any mobile tower or wired connection. Just like satellite phones, this new technology enables communication between smartphones, smartwatches, and other smart gadgets.

BSNL and Viasat trial
During the trial, BSNL and Viasat successfully tested two-way messaging and SOS messaging on an Android smartphone using Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) connectivity. It also made a phone call through a satellite located 36,000 kilometers away which was successful. D2D technology has been trialed at the 8th India Mobile Congress (IMC 2024) being held in Delhi.
