According to the new rule implemented by the Karnataka government, now a fine of Rs 5,000 will be imposed for washing your car. The state is going through an acute water crisis and this has prompted government departments to take stringent measures to save water. Karnataka Water Supply and Sewage Board has banned the use of drinking water for car washing, gardening, construction, water fountains, road construction, and maintenance. And a fine of Rs 5,000 has been imposed for violating the order.
According to a recent report, collectors have declared all the taluks of Bangalore City district as drought-affected. And to overcome the water crisis, private tankers are needed. In an emergency meeting held earlier this week, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said the government will give priority to irrigation and water management projects over other works.
Bangalore and its surrounding districts are heavily dependent on water tankers and around 3,500 water tankers are operational in the city. However, only 10 percent, or 219 tankers are registered with the government. The state government has also fixed prices for water tankers amid allegations of tanker owners charging high prices to customers.
According to the Bengaluru district administration, a 6,000-liter water tanker will cost Rs 600 up to 5 km, an 8,000-liter water tanker will cost Rs 700 and a 12,000-liter water tanker will cost Rs 1,000. For distances between 5-10 km, the prices increase to Rs 750 for a 6,000-liter water tanker, Rs 850 for an 8,000-liter tanker, and Rs 1,200 for a 12,000-liter tanker.
