Bird flu is also called Avian Influenza or H5N2 in scientific language, it is a type of viral infection that affects birds. However, some subtypes of the virus can make humans sick too, which can cause breathing problems, cough, body aches, and sore throat. This infection can also kill a person. This is the reason why when bird flu spreads, it is advised to stay away from poultry farms.
Human death due to H5N2
The World Health Organization confirmed on June 5 that a 59-year-old man from Mexico died due to H5N2. This is the first time a human death has been recorded due to this virus. The person who died on April 24 had no exposure to poultry. In such a situation, the matter of concern is how the transmission of this virus happens.
Why are scientists concerned?
The deaths in Mexico indicate that the virus can spread to humans without the traditional route (poultry exposure). Avian influenza mainly affects birds, but some strains, such as H5N1, can infect humans and cause severe respiratory diseases.
Worldwide spread needs to be prevented
Avian influenza is a zoonotic disease, which means it can spread from animals to humans. It can spread worldwide through the poultry industry and international travel, making this disease an international health emergency.
Although human cases of avian influenza are rare, the ability of the virus to adapt and spread among humans is a serious public health concern. This virus's ability to transmit and spread among humans reveals a new level of transmission or virulence that was not previously seen in this region. The human deaths in Mexico highlight the need to be alert to the dangers posed by zoonotic diseases so that this disease does not spread further.
