Anemia is a condition in which there is a deficiency of red blood cells in the body. These cells work to transport oxygen to the entire body. Deficiency of red blood cells can cause problems like fatigue, weakness, and difficulty in breathing.

Certain vitamins like vitamin B12, folate (also known as folic acid), and sometimes vitamin C play an important role in the formation of these red blood cells. When these vitamins are deficient in the body, the ability to produce healthy red blood cells decreases, causing anemia.

Vitamin B12 deficiency anemia
Vitamin B12 deficiency anemia is the most common type of anemia. This occurs due to inadequate intake or absorption of Vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is mainly found in meat, fish, eggs and dairy products. People who follow a vegetarian diet or suffer from gastrointestinal problems are more likely to develop vitamin B12 deficiency anemia.

Folate deficiency anemia
Folate deficiency anemia occurs when folate intake is not sufficient. Folate is found in abundance in green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, beans, and fortified cereals. Pregnant women, people who consume alcohol, and people with certain obesity-related problems are more susceptible to folate deficiency anemia.

Vitamin C deficiency anemia
Vitamin C deficiency anemia, although less common, can occur in people who consume too few fruits and vegetables. These foods are good sources of Vitamin C. Vitamin C plays an important role in absorbing iron, another essential nutrient for the production of red blood cells. Without enough vitamin C, iron absorption may be reduced, leading to anemia.

Dr. Pawan Kumar Goyal, senior consultant of internal medicine at Fortis Hospital located in Shalimar Bagh, Delhi, talked about the treatment of anemia caused by vitamin deficiency. He said that it focuses on eliminating the deficiency and increasing the levels of vitamins in the body again. This may include:
* Change in diet: Increase intake of foods rich in vitamins. Vitamin B12 deficiency may require supplements. To overcome folate deficiency, folic acid medicine can be taken.
* Vitamin supplements: In cases where dietary changes alone are not enough, doctors may prescribe supplements to overcome vitamin deficiencies.
* Regular testing: Individuals with vitamin deficiency anemia need to have regular blood tests to monitor their vitamin levels and response to treatment.
