How did this festival start?
Mother Lakshmi is considered to be the one who started the tradition of worshiping the Amla tree and eating food under its tree on Amla Navami. According to the popular story, once Goddess Lakshmi came to visit the earth. On the way, he wished to worship Lord Vishnu and Shiva together. Mother Lakshmi pondered how Vishnu and Shiva could be worshiped together. Then it occurred to him that the properties of Tulsi and Bael are found together in Amla. Tulsi is dear to Lord Vishnu and Bel is dear to Shiva. Mother Lakshmi worshiped the Amla tree considering it to be a symbol of Vishnu and Shiva. Pleased with the worship, Vishnu and Shiva appeared. Mother Lakshmi prepared food under the Amla tree and served it to Vishnu and Lord Shiva. After this, he himself had his meal. The day this incident happened, it was Kartik Shukla Navami, since then this tradition has been going on.
